4. Performance and resource considerations

At this early stage, the two areas to keep in mind are:

• Realtime Performance. Since all readings from all defined datalogger will be queried, examined, stored internally, and refreshed on the display at every polling interval, this polling interval should be kept within reason. Lively displays will have an unavoidable impact on the overall performance of the system.
• Data file growth. Logs of all readings from all sites will be continually appended to the datlog file at every poll interval as long as the sollog deamon is running. With no intervention, this will eventually cause the file to hit the file-system limit unless diskspace itself is first exhausted. The system administrator should carefully consider how to control the growth of this file. Options such as culling, compression, etc. could be implemented manually, or automated versions thereof could be developed to run as background tasks.
